What do I do if I am pulled over for DUI in New Jersey?

  • If you are pulled over for suspicion of DUI, be cooperative; provide your license, registration and insurance card. Answer questions honestly but concisely; do not elaborate or provide any information not directly asked for.
  • You may be asked to get out of the car if the officer suspects you’ve been drinking, to do some field sobriety tests. Listen carefully to the officer’s instructions as you are carrying out the sobriety tests
  • If you fail the field sobriety test, you’ll likely be taken to the station for an Alcotest (Breathalyzer). You MUST comply.
  • If you have any physical issues/limitations that could affect your performance on the field sobriety test, it is imperative that you tell the officer. Such statements are being recorded and could help you with your case later.
